Scholarships in Malaysia
Overview
Malaysia is an emerging destination for higher education, particularly for students from Muslim-majority and developing countries due to cultural affinity and affordable costs. Malaysia's tuition fees are relatively low (e.g., a Master's might be US$3,000-5,000/year at a public university) and living costs are moderate (perhaps US$300-400/month for comfortable living). The Malaysian government and universities offer several scholarships to international students.
Malaysian Government Scholarships
The flagship Malaysian government scholarship for foreign students, aimed at attracting talented international postgraduate students to Malaysian universities. It provides full tuition coverage and a monthly living allowance, which — given Malaysia's low cost of living (student accommodation can be around RM 500/month) — goes a long way. Fields given priority include Science, Engineering, ICT, Business, and Social Sciences, particularly areas of Malaysian national interest such as sustainable development and biotechnology. It's highly competitive and usually requires a strong academic record (3.5/4.0 CGPA minimum). Open to candidates from countries with diplomatic relations with Malaysia.
Part of Malaysia's foreign aid initiatives, MTCP scholarships provide fully funded Master's degrees (by coursework, in English) for students from developing countries that are MTCP partner nations. The program runs for 12–24 months depending on the course. Focus areas often relate to technical fields, public policy, economics, and Islamic finance — areas where Malaysia has recognized developmental expertise. The RM 3,500 monthly stipend is quite generous relative to local living costs.
Commonwealth Scholarship (Malaysia)
A small number of scholarships for students from other Commonwealth countries to do graduate studies in Malaysia.
University Scholarships
UKM Vice Chancellor Scholarship
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) offers the Vice Chancellor Scholarship as a comprehensive funding package for international Master's (by research) and PhD students. It covers full tuition, a monthly stipend, and accommodation — making it one of the more complete university-level scholarships in Malaysia. Targeted at candidates with strong academic records who will contribute to UKM's research profile.
UPM International Graduate Student Scholarship (IGSS)
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) offers the International Graduate Student Scholarship providing a 30–50% tuition fee waiver for selected international Master's and PhD students. UPM also has a Graduate Research Assistant scheme where students receive a monthly stipend in exchange for work on a research project. UPM is particularly strong in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, and engineering.
Monash University Malaysia Awards
Monash University's Malaysian branch campus offers Monash High Achiever Awards (partial tuition waivers) for international undergrads and postgrads, and a specific Women in Engineering Scholarship. As a branch campus of one of Australia's top universities, a Monash Malaysia degree carries the same brand recognition while being significantly more affordable — making these scholarships excellent value.
University of Nottingham Malaysia Provost's Award
The University of Nottingham's Malaysian branch campus offers the Provost's Award — a full scholarship — for its very top applicants, alongside high-achiever scholarships (15–25% tuition reduction) for strong students. Like Monash Malaysia, this is an accredited UK degree earned at a fraction of the cost of studying in the UK itself.
Tips & Notes
- Malaysia's low cost of living means even partial scholarships go a long way.
- MIS with RM 1,500 (~US$350) monthly stipend can cover a significant portion of living expenses.
- International students are restricted in work options (part-time only in certain sectors during breaks).
- Branch campuses of foreign universities (Monash, Nottingham) often have their own scholarship funds.
