Scholarships in South Korea
Overview
South Korea is a high-tech, academically strong country that has been investing in attracting international students. The South Korean government and universities provide generous funding options, making it possible to pursue degrees with minimal cost. If you plan well, you can often study in Korea entirely for free. The GKS is the golden ticket, but even without it, many universities will find ways to support good students.
Global Korea Scholarship (GKS)
South Korea's government scholarship – formerly known as KGSP – is one of the most comprehensive scholarship programs worldwide. In 2026, the government increased GKS graduate slots to 2,000 students.
GKS for Graduate Studies
Offers fully funded Master's or PhD study in South Korea. Essentially all major expenses are covered. The scholarship runs for 3 years for Master's (1 year Korean language training + 2 years degree) or 4 years for PhD (1 year language + 3 years degree), with possible extensions. You still must complete the Korean language year even if your degree is in English (unless you already hold TOPIK level 5 or 6). Available via two tracks: Embassy Track (apply through the Korean embassy in your country, with a national quota) or University Track (apply directly to participating Korean universities). In 2026, the government increased GKS graduate slots to 2,000 students.
GKS for Undergraduate
A fully funded scholarship for bachelor's degrees in South Korea, running for 5 years total: 1 year of intensive Korean language training followed by a 4-year undergraduate degree. All major expenses are covered. The scholarship is available via Embassy Track and University Track. It targets students fresh out of high school who want to pursue their undergraduate education in Korea's world-class universities.
University Scholarships
KAIST Full Scholarships
KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is a top science and technology university that currently offers all international undergraduate students a full tuition scholarship plus a living stipend by default. POSTECH has similar arrangements. This makes KAIST one of the best-value undergraduate options in the world for students interested in STEM — you effectively receive a fully funded education at a world-class institution.
SNU Global Scholarship
Seoul National University (SNU), Korea's most prestigious university, provides tuition waivers and sometimes a living stipend or dormitory support for selected international graduate students through the SNU Global Scholarship. At the PhD level particularly, SNU professors often fund international students through research project grants, in addition to or instead of the formal scholarship.
Korea University Global KU Scholarship
Full or 50% tuition scholarships for top incoming international undergraduate students.
Yonsei University Global Leader Fellowship
For certain graduate programs at Yonsei, covering tuition.
Other Scholarships
POSCO Asia Fellowship
Sponsored by the POSCO conglomerate (one of the world's largest steel companies), this fellowship supports Asian students pursuing social sciences or humanities Master's degrees at Korean universities. It reflects Korea's investment in cultural exchange and building academic ties across Asia.
Art Major Asian Scholarship (K-Arts)
Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts) provides full scholarships for talented students in music, fine arts, theatre, and film from across Asia. This is an excellent opportunity for students with artistic talent who want to immerse themselves in Korea's vibrant arts and culture scene at the country's premier arts institution.
