Scholarships in Sweden
Overview
Sweden offers almost free education for EU students, but charges tuition for non-EU. To support incoming talent, the Swedish Institute and universities provide generous scholarships. PhD positions in Sweden are paid jobs – if accepted as a PhD candidate, you receive a salary (~SEK 24,000+ per month) with no tuition. Sweden's cost of living is high, but top scholarships cover those well.
Swedish Institute Scholarships
The Swedish Institute (a government agency) offers about 250 fully-funded scholarships each year to international students from specific countries (mostly developing nations receiving ODA) to pursue a full-time Master's in Sweden. This is one of the most generous programs available — it covers 100% of tuition paid directly to the university and provides a substantial monthly living allowance, plus a travel grant and insurance. The program has an emphasis on contributing to sustainable development and leadership, and fields of study are open. Check the SI website for the eligible country list each year, as it can change.
University Scholarships
All Swedish universities that charge tuition have tuition waiver scholarships for non-EU students.
Uppsala University IPK Scholarships
Uppsala University offers full tuition scholarships for selected international non-EU students in several Master's programs. Many Swedish universities use a single application that automatically considers eligible applicants for available scholarships if you apply by certain deadlines — no separate scholarship form is needed.
Lund University Global Scholarship
Lund University awards partial or full tuition waivers to approximately 15% of the top non-EU applicants to its Master's programs. Like most Swedish universities, Lund automatically considers all applicants for the Global Scholarship without requiring a separate application — your academic merit at the time of admission determines the award.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology Scholarships
KTH, one of Europe's leading technical universities, offers multiple scholarships covering 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of tuition. Some are funded by industry partners such as Volvo and Ericsson, and are often tied to specific engineering fields. Chalmers University of Technology has similar industry-funded scholarship programs for non-EU Master's students.
Stockholm School of Economics Scholarships
Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), one of the top business schools in Europe, offers full scholarships for its MSc programs to non-EU students. These are merit-based and highly competitive, given SSE's strong reputation in finance and business.
Tips & Notes

- Many universities use a single application that automatically considers you for available scholarships.
- If you get only a tuition waiver, you'd need to self-fund living (~SEK 8,000/month requirement for visa).
- The Visby Programme offers scholarships for students from Baltic/Eastern Partnership countries.
